SOFT FOLD is a research project conducted by designer Davide Biancucci, focused on canvas folding chair. First presented in 2025 with a namesake exhibition in collaboration with Campeggi, the research now expands with a second edition, involving new designers and companies whose works have contributed, either in continuity or in contrast, to the evolution of this seating typology. Developed as a physical archive, it was conceived as a tool for typological comparison, documenting continuity, variations, and diversity in design solutions.

Soft Fold is an exhibition that has no ambition to say more than it does. It does exactly what it says. Chairs that open, close, or can be disassembled. I am interested in safari and folding chairs because, although they were designed more than a hundred years ago, they still reflect a contemporary way of living: informal, mobile, and lightweight. Sitting on a piece of canvas is an immediate, intuitive solution, hard to beat and, above all, not yet consumed by cosmetic attempts of design. The frame opens and closes as needed. There is no room for interpretation: minimum material for maximum comfort and performance. The exhibition is built around a single objective: trace and reveal the codes of beauty in objects born to work, not to appear as something else. Forty chairs, each with its own characteristics and similarities, create a common scenario. Historical models, more recent examples, and contemporary productions, in dialogue and in contrast, outline a typological framework that we should observe with more attention.
